Hello friends, happy fall! So glad to leave summer behind and finally be in what is obviously the best time of the year. Spooky Season is upon us!

I’ll get right to the point: We have a tonnnn of workshops coming up over the next few weeks on some of my favorite — and often most-requested — topics to cover, including improving your pitches, upping your personal essay game, learning how to build a longform narrative, improving your overall freelance business, and so, so much more. I’m also doing a limited-space pitch roundtable review session in early November, which is intense but loads of fun. The whole schedule is below, feel free to register for as many events as you’d like!

Freelancing With Tim is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

I’d also love to hear what topics you’d like to see future workshops on! Email me ideas to tim@freelancingwithtim.com and put “Workshop ideas” in the subject line. Everything is on the table!

Last, I am offering one-on-one pitch reviews and coaching sessions every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Schedule a time to go over a pitch, work on story development, talk about career development, get advice on building a successful freelance business, get edits on a story, or anything else you need help with. Book a timeslot on my Calendly here.

Now, on to the events! (All times are Eastern.)

October 18 @ 4 pm: The art of structuring a longform feature. Join me as I lead a deconstruction exercise of a longform narrative story and give you tips on how to use those tools in your writing.

October 19 @ 4 pm: Pitch perfect: Everything to know about pitching stories. This workshop will cover everything from the nuts-and-bolts of structuring a compelling pitch to the high-level questions such as, “Is this even a story?”

October 25 @ 4 p.m.: How to use social media to find freelance work. Confused on how to get work using Twitter? Curious about the secrets of LinkedIn? This workshop is all about using social media to find work as a freelancer and how social can help you build a sustainable — and profitable! — business.

October 26 @ 4 pm: How to write better service journalism. Want to write stories that help people live better lives? Join me and a seasoned service reporter Anna Goldfarb for a workshop on finding, reporting, and pitching great service stories.

October 27 @ 4 pm: An introduction to the basics of being a freelancer. Are you new to the freelance life? This is the workshop for you! We'll cover all the basics of being an independent journalist, including invoicing, negotiating contracts, finding work, building relationships with editors, writing strong first drafts, and more.

November 1 @ 4 p.m.: Personalized pitch feedback roundtable lead by Tim. Bring a pitch or two you want feedback on to this 8-person roundtable, which will be structured as a grad-school level class in which everyone is expected to participate. I’ll do a short bit at the top focused on expert tips for pitching, followed by a roundtable discussion where your fellow attendees and I will offer you feedback on your pitch(es).

November 3 @ 4 p.m.: Contracts, rates, platforms, and more: The business of freelancing. Freelancing is about so much more than just filing on time, and this panel will go over everything from negotiating a contract and setting rates to building a platform and branding your business. Nothing's off-topic, so bring all of your questions!

November 7 @ 4 p.m.: How to write better personal essays. Not sure how to turn a personal story into an essay you can sell? Wondering how to structure a personal essay? How do you even pitch one? We’ll cover all those questions and more in this workshop featuring some brilliant essayists.

See you in a workshop this month bye ily!

It's great to know that the sessions will be recorded if we can't attend live.

One more question: how do we register as paid subscribers? Thank you, Tim!
